Tips for More Effective Slide Presentations (PowerPoint)

Here are a few handy tips to help you add a little zing! to your next presentation. They are, of course, far from comprehensive, but they’re a good start.

Write a script.

  • List a simple agenda, and follow that order for your presentation

Less is more.

  • One thing at a time, one main point per slide, limit the number of slides
  • Overuse of text is a common mistake. Too much text makes the slide unreadable - Stick to a few key words.
  • Use bullets, not paragraphs
  • Use images sparingly

Think outside the screen.

  • The audience came to see YOU speak, not read your slides
  • Display just the key points and tell them the details
  • If your topic has very detailed information or data, consider creating a separate handout to be available at the end of the presentation or webinar.  This is also a great way to create follow-up opportunities and capture business leads.

Collaborate.

  • Ask questions of your audience, and invite your audience to ask questions to create more engagement

Quick Tip:
Do not copy and paste full slides from old presentations.

  • Pasting full slides from old presentations brings along all the old slide styling into the new template.
  • There just isn’t a good way to put a new template onto your old content.
  • Instead, just copy the text/graph/image from the old slide paste it into the slide in the new template. Better yet, consider creating your content in a Microsoft Word® document and paste it into a fresh template.

Add charts or compare and contrast information:

  • Charts (3 styles) are in the slides list
  • If the preloaded chart style works, right click and choose ‘Edit Data’ to enter Excel information
